First pre-production Foton pickup assembled in South Africa

Foton reported that its first South African pre-production CKD pickup came off the assembly line on 30 September 2025. The announcement marked a preparatory stage in the brand’s local manufacturing programme.
Pre-production vehicles are part of establishing an assembly operation before it moves into regular production. The milestone should therefore be read as manufacturing progress, rather than confirmation of immediate retail stock.
A longer-term local presence
Foton described local assembly as part of its plans to develop production capacity and respond to the African market. The announcement also pointed to opportunities for local supplier involvement and skills development.
For a customer choosing a bakkie, model suitability and the specification of the actual vehicle remain the key considerations. Thorp Foton can help you explore the current Tunland range and check availability for the derivative you need.
